Roger Federer wins Australian Open title and 18th Grand Slam of his career after dramatic victory over great rival Rafael Nadal

After missing the second half of last season with a knee injury, the Swiss star came back in style by winning the Australian Open 2017 and turning the tables on great rival Spaniard Rafael Nadal with a gripping 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory in just over 3 1/2 hours. At Melbourne, Australia. At the Rod Laver Arena.

The match marked an extraordinary comeback for the players, both of whom have battled recent injuries and are older than most of their fellow tournament opponents.

Federer claims the 18th Grand Slam title of his career and his first since the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

The Swiss claimed his first win over Spaniard Nadal in the Australian Open having lost three times previously
Federer has five Australian Open titles, just one less than all-time leader Novak Djokovic.

Old Rivalry is always the best. Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal.
The absence of Roger & Rafa in a grand slam final made us realize how much they mean to the sport of tennis. Relentless competitors and even better sportsmen even in defeat. Their humility and genuine love for the game are what makes them so great. Thank you both for another spectacular match and for your rivalry. Congrats Roger Federer.

They gone beyond champions. Congratulations both of you sisters.

FIFA has decided the World Cup will be expanded to host 48 teams, up from 32

An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams will precede a knockout stage for the remaining 32 which will come into effect in time for the 2026 World Cup.

The sport's world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich, Switzerland on Tuesday.
The number of tournament matches will rise to 80, from 64, but the eventual winners will still play only seven games during the tournament.

The tournament will be completed within 32 days - a measure to appease powerful European clubs, who objected to reform because of a crowded international schedule for football clubs.
The changes mark the first World Cup expansion since 1998.

FIFA sport's world governing body wants the World Cup to be more "inclusive for all" - and that means giving more of FIFA's 211 member associations the chance to take part in the tournament.
