Argentina won its first-ever Davis Cup

Argentina won its first-ever Davis Cup by BNP Paribas title after winning both reverse singles to beat the hosts Croatia 3-2 in a thrilling Final in Zagreb.

The South American nation was one set from defeat in the fourth match, with the  Croatian Marin Cilic leading Juan Martin del Potro two sets to love, and they would mount a historic rally to lift the Davis Cup trophy. Del Potro turned in his first career two-set comeback 6-7(4), 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, followed by a clutch 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win for Federico Delbonis over Ivo Karlovic.

Argentina completed an improbable comeback to claim its first Davis Cup title, storming back from the brink of elimination to defeat the hosts Croatia coming into this weekend’s final between Argentina and Croatia in Zagreb, it was clear that the tie would offer everything that makes the team competition special. Yet somehow, on each count, the three days of play exceeded even the mostly wildly enthusiastic Davis Cup fan’s.Indeed, these were three terrific days of tennis, with the last day the most exciting of all. Although Delpo and Cilic gave us an amazing match, the one that all fans of tennis will remember will be Delbonis. For guy who normally flies under the radar to play the best match of his career and clinch the Davis Cup for a country that wanted it so desperately, that was a true storybook ending.
Congrats to the Argentina team in winning the Davis Cup 2016. Well done.
